Las Calaveras or skeletons like La Catrina were created by José Guadalupe Posada. The images of skeletons and skulls were a common form of social criticism in the publications of the late nineteenth century and the early  twentieth century used by several cartoonists. Currently La Catrina is the characteristic image associated with the celebration of one of the important and famous traditions of Mexico - The Day of the Dead.
